About Us

Bruce Shaw provide Building Surveying services throughout Scotland and, on occasion, well beyond and have done so for more than 20 years from our base in Dalgety Bay in West Fife, just north of Edinburgh. During that time we have been involved in all manner of projects, from advising on defects which might take less than an hour to inspect and report upon, to the £3M refurbishment of a large building taking almost 3 years. Managing Director, Colin Bruce has in excess of 40 years’ experience in both the Public and Private sectors and was for many years an active member within the RICS during which he co-authored the existing guidance notes relating to Dilapidations in Scotland.

Our primary function, as Chartered Building Surveyors, is to advise upon the condition, maintenance and repair of existing buildings and somewhat less frequently we inspect new buildings, either to provide a pre acquisition survey or where they are to be occupied under a lease agreement, in the form of a pre lease assessment. In simple terms, for Building Surveyor, read “Building Doctor” (NB. occasionally pathologist). Whatever the building's age and forms of construction, we can and do assist investors, owners and occupiers understand them more fully. This has arguably become even more important recently, with the cost of energy literally going through the roof, placing a significant burden upon home owners and businesses alike. We employ thermal imagery, when the conditions allow, to help owners comprehend where those heat losses are occurring and can also advise on how those losses might be addressed to reduce their running costs.

Bruce Shaw act for individuals and, on occasion, through property factors and agents for those in multi-occupied buildings. We deal with all types of building and have been involved in Public Buildings, hotels, churches, residential flats, castles, shops, offices, production and warehouse facilities and many other more unusual sites as well. Although their constructions may vary widely, the basic principles and materials technology that bind them together is what we are able to interrogate using our training and years of experience.
